Understanding them

When the immune system overreacts

Allergies happen when your child's immune system treats something harmless — a food, pollen, dust or a pet — as a threat, triggering symptoms from a runny nose or rash to tummy upset or wheezing.

Asthma is closely linked: the airways become sensitive and inflamed, narrowing in response to triggers and causing coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. Allergies and asthma often travel together, which is why we look at the whole picture.

With the right diagnosis and a clear plan, the vast majority of children live full, active, symptom-free lives.

Signs to look for

Symptoms in children

Every child is different, and symptoms can be easy to miss. If any of these sound familiar, it's worth a check.

Allergy signs

Sneezing, runny or blocked nose
Itchy, red or watery eyes
Skin rashes, hives or eczema flare-ups
Tummy pain, vomiting or diarrhoea after foods
Swelling of the lips, face or tongue
Itchy mouth or throat

Asthma signs

Frequent coughing, often worse at night
Wheezing or a whistling sound when breathing
Shortness of breath or fast breathing
Tight chest or complaints of 'chest hurting'
Getting breathless during play or exercise
Symptoms that flare with colds or triggers

Seek urgent help if your child has difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, or becomes floppy or drowsy after a suspected allergic reaction. For emergencies, call 998 or go to your nearest A&E.

Common triggers

What sets it off?

Identifying your child's triggers is the first step to lasting relief. Common culprits include:

Dust mites Pollen (trees, grass) Pet dander Foods (nuts, egg, milk) Mould spores Smoke & pollution Insect stings Cold air & weather changes Exercise Certain medicines

Getting answers

Allergy testing & diagnosis

We take a careful history, then use the right tests to pinpoint exactly what's going on — no guesswork.

Skin prick testing

Quick, gentle testing that shows reactions to common allergens within about 15–20 minutes — suitable for children of most ages.

Blood (IgE) testing

A simple blood test measuring specific antibodies, useful when skin testing isn't suitable or to confirm results.

Lung function (spirometry)

For older children, a painless breathing test that helps diagnose asthma and measure how well the lungs are working.

Supervised food challenge

The gold-standard for food allergy, carried out carefully under medical supervision to confirm or rule out a reaction.

Care tailored to your child

Managing allergy & asthma

Once we know the cause, we build a plan around your child's life — so symptoms stop getting in the way.

First step

Trigger avoidance

Practical, liveable advice on reducing exposure to your child's specific triggers at home and school.

Medication

Antihistamines & creams

The right medicines to calm allergy symptoms and soothe eczema, with clear guidance on when and how to use them.

Asthma

Inhalers & preventers

A tailored inhaler plan — relievers for symptoms and preventers to keep airways calm — with proper technique coaching.

Long-term

Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)

For suitable children, oral immunotherapy can gradually reduce sensitivity and offer lasting relief.

Every child

Written action plan

A clear, personalised plan for daily care and what to do in a flare-up — easy to share with school and carers.

Safety

Emergency training

For severe allergies, adrenaline auto-injector training so you and your child's carers feel confident and prepared.

Allergy & asthma, answered

At what age can my child be tested for allergies?
Skin prick testing can be done from a young age, and blood (IgE) tests at any age. We'll always choose the most suitable, comfortable approach based on your child's age and symptoms.
Is allergy testing painful?
Skin prick testing is quick and only mildly uncomfortable — a tiny scratch on the forearm. Most children tolerate it very well, and results come back in about 15–20 minutes.
Will my child grow out of their allergies?
Many children do outgrow certain allergies, particularly milk and egg, while others such as nut allergies can be lifelong. We monitor over time and re-test where appropriate.
How is childhood asthma diagnosed?
Through a careful history, examination and — for older children — a simple breathing test (spirometry). We look at symptom patterns and triggers to reach an accurate diagnosis.
Does my child need to take medicine forever?
Not necessarily. Many children need treatment only during flare-ups or certain seasons. We always aim for the lowest effective treatment and review regularly.
Can you help with eczema too?
Yes. Eczema is closely linked to allergy, and we manage it alongside — with a gentle skincare routine, the right treatments, and testing where a trigger is suspected.
